Natural Hair Girls Who LIFT Newsletter Feature: Ashley Mike (@ashsomebody)
This week we're highlighting Ashley Mike (@ashsomebody), she's from Huntsville, AL, a personal trainer and owner of Modaste Fitness.

When did you start your fitness journey or started training?

My fitness journey started in 2016. I looked in the mirror and hated what I saw so I hired a trainer the next day and never looked back.

Preferred method of training?

Powerlifting! There’s nothing like it!

What are the most rewarding things you've achieved since your journey?

The most rewarding I would have to say is my impact on women specifically women of color. They see me on Instagram lifting heavy weight and tell me how much I inspire them to get in the gym. That’s all I could ever want.

What lesson(s) have you learned this past year?

Rest, mentally and physically, is the best form of self care.

If you do strength training, how does lifting heavy make you feel?

Lifting heavy makes me feel like a total badass for sure! To see where I came from back in high school weighing 98lbs on a good day, to weighing 160lbs and being able to squat and deadlift myself and then some...priceless!

Do you have any role models from Instagram or in your hometown that helped you in your journey?

My first trainer @jquenow. She’s the one who lit this fitness fire in me and encouraged me to pursue personal training. My powerlifting coach @futureisfemalepowerlifting. She pushes me like no other. So knowledgeable and passionate.

What is your next goal in your fit life?

I have my next powerlifting meet May 8 so all I want to do is beat all my numbers from my last meet in November. If I can get a 210 squat, 125 bench, and 315 deadlift I’d be pretty stoked!!

Do you have any mantras/affirmations/quotes you’d like to share?

One quote that sticks with me is “results or excuses, you can’t have both”. We tend to make all these excuses and get in our own way when we should just suck it up and keep going till we hit that finish line.

What are the activities you do on your down time (or recovery day)?

Sleep!!! I also work night shift at the hospital so sleep is very precious to me.

Advice to others who are hesitant or scared to go after their goals...

Like Nike says, “Just do it!” You don’t want to live life thinking “what if?” I’m all about living for today. If you want to do something, just simply do it because tomorrow isn’t promised to anyone.
