Natural Hair Girls Who LIFT Newsletter Feature: Alex Gaspard @agaspp

This week I'm highlighting Alex Gaspard (@agaspp), she's hails from Boston and is a cycling instructor at Turnstyle Cycle & Bootcamp.

When did you start your fitness journey or started training?

I’ve exercised on and off since college, but my dedication to fitness really began in 2017, when I signed up for a half marathon. I got addicted to showing up for myself and my goals, and though I eventually transitioned away from running into other forms of training, the half marathon prep experience made me a consistent, devoted sweat addict!

Favorite module of training?

Beat based cycling classes are my number one love - it’s the reason I became a spin instructor!

What are the most rewarding things you've achieved since your journey?

Becoming a fitness instructor has been so rewarding. In the very segregated city of Boston, being one of the few faces of color leading folks in exercise is so rewarding. I love having other black girls in my class and knowing that I am creating the visibility and representation I craved when I first started taking studio classes.

What lesson(s) have you learned this past year?

I’ve learned that what “healthy” means really can change depending on the situation. Before the pandemic, motivating myself to take a workout class was healthy. Now, staying indoor and working out from home is what is healthy for me. Learning to be flexible and adaptive with the way I define health and how I approach my fitness routines based on wanting to be healthy and keep those around me healthy means I need to prioritize social distancing and responsible measures - health now is less about being fit and muscular, but about not getting COVID or exposing my loved ones to it.

I’m so excited and motivated by the community of black women who love fitness, and want to grow that community! Always feel free to add me on IG or shoot me a DM ☺️
