Natural Hair Girls Who LIFT Newsletter Feature: LaToya Anderson @chelleorc
When did you start your fitness journey or started training?
My journey began through dance. I was a teen at the time and, like many, was conscious of my size. I was just bigger, taller, and wider, and fell in love with dance both as a way to lose weight and more importantly, express myself. After studying dance seriously for over a decade, I burned out in my mid-20s and my body image was completely warped. I eventually found Crossfit, and within Crossfit, found Olympic weightlifting. The strength, speed, power, and coordination needed to execute each lift, in addition to the near-zero focus on looks, was a beautiful alternative.
Favorite module of training?
Current love is Olympic weightlifting but I'd love to try Strongman.
What are the most rewarding things you've achieve since your journey?
Viewing my body size and muscles as a strength rather than something to battle against, as was the case with dance. This helped me heal my relationship with my body.
What lesson(s) have you learned this past year?
I've learned how important it is to lean into community and how powerful art is in my life. They both have been pivotal to improving or at least maintaining my mental health through this pandemic.
